Crumpled and Torn Sig Tag Tutorial

This tutorial was created on August 18, 2004.  If it bears any resemblance to another tutorial on the net, it is pure coincidence.  The skills that you will learn here are your own, and I hope that you will find them useful.  In this tutorial, I will assume that you have a basic working knowledge of PSP and plug-ins, and it is made for upper level beginners or intermediate skill levels.  Remember to save your work often.

Materials:

  • You will need Paint Shop Pro, of course.  I use Version 8.10, but it should also work in older versions.  You can download a trial version of Paint Shop Pro from JASC

  • Tube of your choice or use this Tube

  • You will the need Toadies Plugin and Xenofex 2 (a demo is available at Alien Skin)

  • Font of your choice.  I used the Viking font but many others can be found here

Instructions:

Open a new image 600 x 600 transparent.  Open the tube of your choice or the one provided.  Edit copy, select your new blank image and choose paste as new layer.

Right click in your layer pane and choose duplicate layer 2 times.

Rename the first copy "copy 1" and the second copy "copy 2".  You should now have three layers with the same image.

tas_bwscreen_layers.jpg (314x206 -- 41052 bytes)

Hide the copy 1 and copy 2 layers by clicking on the eye to the right of each layer.  There should now be red X's on those two layers with only layer 1 visible.

tas_bwscreen_layers1.jpg (314x201 -- 43993 bytes)

Make sure your first layer is selected and apply the Toadies Blast em'  filter with these settings: Diffuse 67, Transparency 211.

Apply the Xenofex 2 Cracks filter with these settings:

candt1.jpg (477x280 -- 37827 bytes)

Right click on the layer window and add a new raster layer.  Arrange/Send to Bottom.  Select this layer.

Choose a dark foreground and lighter background color from your image.  I used F - #BAA7A6 and B - #DBD3D9.  Change foreground to Gradient and choose Foreground-Background from the flyout, angle = 0, repeats = 2.

candt2.jpg (323x191 -- 33837 bytes)

Flood fill the bottom layer with this gradient.

Apply the Xenofex 2 Crumple filter with these settings:

candt3.jpg (390x403 -- 76584 bytes)

Switch back to Raster 1 layer.  Apply a drop shadow with these settings:  V&H 3, Opacity 60, Blur 5, color black.

Merge/Merge visible.

Unhide copy 1 layer.  Image/Resize/60%, resize all layers unchecked.

Apply Toadies Blast n' Blur with these settings:  X 94, Y 66.

Unhide Copy 2 layer.  Image/Resize/70%, resize all layers unchecked.

Move image down and left to desired position.  Apply a drop shadow with the settings used before.

Merge/Merge visible.  Adjust, sharpness, sharpen.

Save this image as a .psp image for later use and to add your text to.

Add a new raster layer and re-name this layer "text".

From your picture, choose a dark foreground color and a light background color.  I choose #585152 for the Foreground and #E4DFE6 for the Background color.

Select your text tool, floating, size (your choice), stroke 1, anti-alias checked.

Type your name or text of your choice.  With text still selected, move the text to the area of your choosing.

Effects, 3D effects, Inner bevel, color white, with the following settings:

candt4.jpg (378x517 -- 107255 bytes)

Apply a drop shadow with the settings used before.  Merge/Merge Visible.

Resize your image to about 75%, Adust/Sharpness/Sharpen.

I added one additional layer, rotated the text 90 degrees, applied the same Inner Bevel and Drop Shadows, lowered the opacity to 60% for extra effect.  Use your imagination to and be creative!  Add a border if you like and have fun.

Export your finished file as a .gif or .jpg and your all set.

Hope you enjoyed this tutorial.
